Fahy Committee

The Fahy Committee, also known as the President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services was established on July 26, 1948 to oversee successful integration of the Armed Services.

The committee developed a guiding principle for getting rid of the nation’s racial caste system and specifically called for actions such as federal anti-lynching legislation, abolishing poll taxes, ending ballot box discrimination, and desegregating the military. The committee said that “a government that demands service from its citizens without respect to color, has no moral or legal right, to set bounds to that service because of color”.

As a result of its examination into the rules, procedures, and practices of the armed services, both past and present, the Committee is convinced that a policy of equality of treatment and opportunity will make for a better Army, Navy, and Air Force. It is right and just. It will strengthen the nation.
